Woodturning Demonstration

Invited woodturners from Australia, China, Morocco, USA and Laos joined the woodturning demonstration during the World Wood Day celebration in Vientiane, Laos from 29th-31st March 2018. Theodoros Haralampou presented his extraordinary skills using modern electric lathes and made some amazing spinning tops and goblets with a diameter of only 6mm. An interesting human-powered lathe was demonstrated by Andy Chen from USA. If you want a spinning top, you need to offer your labor to power the lathe. Local woodturners brought their huge lathes to the venue and showed some of their work. A Chinese traditional wooden lathe was presented by the intangible cultural heritage bearer Master Li Xuemin. Hassan Farissi is a traditional foot-turner from Morocco who demonstrated traditional foot-turning with his homemade lathe. Mini-lathes were set up for children to experience woodturning under the guidance of woodturner Su Jinyong. The audience was given opportunities to interact with the woodturners and to do some trying under the guidance.
