In cooperation with the International Wood Culture Society (IWCS) and UPOU Foundation Inc. (UPOUFI), the Faculty of Management and Development Studies, UP Open University (UPOU) hosted the 2nd Wood Design and Carving Competition and the 1st Wood Forum on 24 Feb. 2014. The forum’s participants and wood carving and design competitors were guided by the theme of the celebration “Wood Connections: Wood in a Changing Culture.” These events highlight the crucial role of wood in ensuring a sustainable future. The three categories of the Wood Design and Carving Competition were wood collapsible house design, wood furniture design, and wood carving. The competition showcased the innovativeness and creativity of Filipino wood designers and carvers. It gathered 52 entries from wood carvers and designers from Antipolo City, Baguio City, Davao City, Paete in Laguna, Hungduan of Ifugao, Betis of Guagua in Pampanga, Binangonan for Rizal and architecture students from UP Diliman. The Wood Culture Forum served as venue for cultural dialogue amongst researchers, scientists, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, foresters, artists, wood carvers, furniture makers, industrial designers and architects and come up with innovative and creative ways to utilize wood sustainability.
