Collaborative Project

The 2016 WWD Collaborative Project kept exploring the possibilities of wood in Bhaktapur. Led by Jacques Vesery and Cillian O'Suilleabhain, 14 international and 5 Nepali talents undertook an ambitious commission for 2 weeks starting on March 8th near an UNESCO World Heritage site at the Vidyarthi Niketan Higher Secondary School that resulted in 4 works.

An installation of 282 carved bricks by 130 artists rose to bring hope of renewal to the community, while a small brick work designed by the students was dedicated to the school as a token of friendship.

Two pieces of playground equipment were built to create a safe wood environment for fun, exercise and play. First was an interactive sculpture of triangle frames that smartly incorporated artistry and functionality along with engravings of students' palm prints. The other was a wooden frame equipped with a woven net, bamboo bells and climbing steps for the kindergarten.

The cross-generational occasion celebrated communal interactions and the unity of local and international communities. It also offered children art-making fun to discover and appreciate the art and craft works in wood.

About WWD

World Wood Day is a cultural event celebrated annually during the week of March 21st to highlight wood as an eco-friendly and renewable biomaterial and to raise awareness on the key role wood plays in a sustainable world. Starting from 2013, WWD celebrations were held in Tanzania, China, Turkey, and Nepal respectively, involving participants from over 100 countries and regions.
