2019 World Wood Day Regional Event in China “Traditional Wood Turning Show " was organized on March 18-19 by Feixiang Maoyanbao Center School in Handan city of Hebei Province.
Four traditional wood turning masters Mr. Guo Qingxun, Mr. Li Zhanghe, Mr. Li Xuemin and Mr. Li Xianqi are from Guangping County and Feixiang County of Hebei Province. They are the inheritors of traditional wood turning skills under the list of intangible cultural heritage in China. They performed their unique techniques on traditional big and small lathes. While turning, they patiently explained the key points of the skills to the students and taught them how to operate. They also brought some of their works to school which made the children full of surprise and excitement about the old craftsmanship.
At the wood class, the teachers and students watched the highlight video of the previous World Wood Day events. Mr. Li Xuemin, the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Shawo Woodturning Skill, introduced the historical origin and cultural value of traditional woodturning skills, and shared his own experience and feelings of participating the 2017 and 2018 World Wood Day in US, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. Tree planting on the school campus makes the activity more meaningful.
World Wood Day is a cultural event celebrated annually during the week of March 21st to highlight wood as an eco-friendly and renewable biomaterial and to raise awareness on the key role wood plays in a sustainable world. Starting from 2013, WWD celebrations were held in Tanzania, China, Turkey, Nepal, and United States respectively, involving participants from over 100 countries and regions.
