Report:

On behalf of the 2013 World Wood Day Symposium organizing committee, we would like to express our thankfulness to all participants for your contribution to the success of the first World Wood Day Symposium on 19-20 March 2013, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We hope you felt, as we did, that this new platform provided an important sounding board for the exchange of ideas and experiences on the wood research, strategy and practice, in the cultural, historical and social contexts and development.
With 30 speakers from 20 countries in attendance, we are very aware that this symposium succeeded in raising awareness of current issues for the crucial role of wood in a sustainable future around the world. The two-day symposium was launched with an overview of recent achievement in research on tropical African commercial wood species. The achievement of research is important in wood identification; the valuable results may serve across boundaries and contribute in diverse areas such as wood trade, wood quality research, wood culture, implementing legislation for combat illegal logging, and more.
Discovering wood properties from studies on wood utilization especially those of historical practices, has been the topic that was mostly touched by speakers of this year’s event. Examples of historical utilization of wood from Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Africa were addressed in the symposium. Contributions of wood in culture within a long span of human civilization were revealed in forms of sculpture, musical instrument, architecture, furniture, etc. Wood species and properties of wood used in relation to the form and function of woodcrafts were explored in presentations, and potential contributions of wood as biomass material to the sustainable world could be found in historical practices were also suggested. Wood and forest industry that plays a crucial role in sustainable development in African countries, has captured attentions of many speakers with concerns on issues pertaining conservation and protection of forests, and sustainability of forests and wood species; solutions for these issues were also proposed and discussed in the session.
Insightful presentations by researchers from Tropical Pesticides Research Institution at Arusha, Tanzania explored efforts of the country in collecting and conserving indigenous plant seeds and its gene bank, controlling and managing pest and pesticides, protecting and preserving biodiversity from invasive plants, plus research on forests and tree species within Mt. Kilimanjaro area. These inspiring talks of special topics on Kilimanjaro brought a perfect end to the two-day event.
In order to keep this platform alive, we would like to invite and welcome you to share any feedback, reflections and critics on 2013 World Wood Day Symposium in writing to contact@worldwoodday.org. Your personal insight will be particularly valuable and beneficial to the next World Wood Day Symposium.
Thank you once again indeed for your involvement in the 2013 World Wood Day Symposium. We cordially hope that you have found this event to be worth your time and effort.
Special Thanks to All Participants and Online Audience
