March 21st is officially designated and recognized as the International Day of Forests by the United Nations General Assembly and 2013 is the first year of recognition. World Wood Day is celebrated on the same day as the International Day of Forests to raise the awareness on how wood plays a key role for a sustainable future. The idea for world wood day was first advocated in 2009 by International Wood Culture Society along with partners and friends. The idea behind World Wood Day is a cultural approach to realize the concept wood is good. To celebrate the initiation, World Wood Day works in concert with Forest Day to bring wood, together with forests, into people's life.
World Wood Day on March 21st is an annual cultural event to increase awareness of the importance and goodness of wood for the public and wood-related industry. Wood, an eco-friendly and renewable biomaterial from nature, plays a crucial role in the development of human civilization and environment. We invites everyone to share their passion for wood and to acquire a more comprehensive knowledge of wood on this special day to better put the core concept of "Wood is Good" into practice in our daily lives.
To celebrate the first year World Wood Day and International Day of Forest as well, 2013 World Wood Day with the theme "A Cultural Approach to Achieve Wood is Good," commence its inaugural celebration on March 21st, in Tanzania with a series of specially designed events after years of preparation.
The 2013 World Wood Day Symposium, Wood in Africa: Cultural Distribution, Historical Utilization and Future Sustainability, symbolizes the commitment to raise awareness for current issues and to enhance multidisciplinary discussions for the crucial role of wood in a sustainable world.
The Woodcraft event has four activities, the Local Woodcarving Competition, African Wood Carving Show, International Woodcarving Show and Woodturning Show. Having had several prior contests, the local woodcarving show together with other international shows will be true to the event theme, "Wood: Art, Joy and Culture."
Other fun events are planned for World Wood Day. The 2013 World Wood Day drawing competition is open to local children to show their appreciation for wood with their imagination and talents. A tour of specific wood culture spots around Tanzania is added to the agenda. Tree planting is a must for the promotion of International Day of Forest and the World Wood Day. And lastly, join us online for more celebratory activities wherever you are, regardless of time and place!
Please come and celebrate 2013 World Wood Day with us. It is our pleasure to welcome you!
